Tualatin is a city that is a southwestern suburb of Portland, Oregon. It is located south of Tigard in Washington County, one of three Oregon counties that contain the Portland Metropolitan Area. The name is taken from the Tualatin River, which flows along most of the city's northern boundary.
According to Oregon Geographic Names, a post office with the spelling "Tualitin" was established November 5, 1869, and the spelling changed to "Tualatin" in 1915. In the 1880s, the settlement was sometimes called Bridgeport, probably because of the nearby bridge, one of the first built over the Tualatin River. The population was 22,791 at the 2000 census.
Tualatin is the home of Bridgeport Village ("Bridgeport"), a
lifestyle center that opened in early 2005, and has been quite
successful. Built at the site of an old quarry, Bridgeport is built
in faux Italian village style, and features an 18 screen movie
theater, several national and regional chain restaurants and many
chain retail stores, but has no major department store anchor.
Additional nearby retail areas are being constructed (July, 2006).
