South Bend, Indiana is located in northern Indiana just south of the Michigan-Indiana state line. It is 93 miles east of Chicago, and 20 miles from the shores of Lake Michigan.
The city gets its name for being on the southern most bend of the St. Joseph River. It is also the home of the University of Notre Dame. As of 2000, the city population was just over 107,000 people.
Studebaker made cars in South Bend until 1963 but they are an important part f its employment history as well as Bendix Corporation, Singer Sewing Company and Honeywell.
The College Football Hall of Fame has been in town since 1995 but there are plans to move it away to Atlanta, Georgia in 2013.
The Potawatomi Park Zoo is the oldest zoo in Indiana and has grown significantly since the 1970s to over 400 animals.
